Despite it's name, this game does NOT involve any type of computer "hacking". It's actually my favorite "Roguelike" game, orignally based on the "Hack" roguelike. While it may take awhile to learn all of the different commands, the game itself is very deep and involving. Plus, it's different each time you play. Unlike most Roguelikes, Nethack also features optional VGA graphics.NetHack is a legendary roguelike dungeon-crawler that offers endless replayability, depth, and challenge. Designed for ASCII graphics but fully playable in DOS, NetHack immerses players in a perilous dungeon where death is frequent, strategy is key, and discovery is its own reward. Known for its humor, complexity, and richly detailed world, NetHack remains one of the most celebrated and influential games in the roguelike genre. Story: You are a hero chosen to descend into the depths of the Mazes of Menace in search of the fabled Amulet of Yendor. Along the way, you’ll encounter cunning monsters, powerful artifacts, deadly traps, and a host of other surprises. Your journey will test not just your combat prowess, but your cleverness, resourcefulness, and sheer perseverance. Will you ascend as a demigod, or will you perish like countless adventurers before you? Gameplay: At its core, NetHack is a turn-based dungeon crawler with a procedurally generated world, ensuring no two playthroughs are ever the same. Here are the game’s key elements: Classes and Races: Choose from a wide variety of roles (like Wizard, Knight, or Rogue) and races (like Human, Dwarf, or Elf), each with unique abilities and starting equipment. Exploration: Delve through multiple dungeon levels, uncovering secret doors, hidden traps, and mysterious treasures. Combat and Strategy: Face monsters ranging from goblins and dragons to the infamous floating eye, using melee, magic, or ranged attacks. Complex Systems: Interact with your environment in unexpected ways—eat monsters, read cursed scrolls, dip weapons into potions, or pray to your deity for aid. Permadeath: Death is permanent, making every decision matter. Each playthrough is an entirely new adventure. ASCII Graphics or Tile Sets: The DOS version supports classic ASCII art for a minimalist, highly imaginative experience, or optional graphical tiles for players preferring visuals. Notable Features: Rich Interactivity: Almost every object in the game can be interacted with in unique ways, leading to emergent gameplay. For example, dropping a ring into a fountain might summon a water demon—or give you a wish. Pet System: Players begin with a loyal pet (like a dog, cat, or pony) that helps in combat and scavenging. Alignment and Deities: Your character’s alignment affects interactions with the gods. Anger them, and you may be struck by lightning. Sense of Humor: From inside jokes to bizarre item descriptions (e.g., “A +2 Hawaiian Shirt”), NetHack never takes itself too seriously. Reception: NetHack has been praised for its incredible depth and emergent gameplay, earning it a place in gaming history as one of the greatest roguelikes ever made. However, its steep learning curve and ASCII graphics can intimidate new players. Nonetheless, those who persevere are rewarded with a deeply satisfying and endlessly replayable experience.
